Investigate the House of Grief is a quest in Act Three of Baldur's Gate 3. Sean's first PC games were Full Throttle and Total Annihilation and his taste has stayed much the same since. When not scouring games for secrets or bashing his head against puzzles, you'll find him revisiting old Total War campaigns, agonizing over his Destiny 2 fit, or still trying to finish the Horus Heresy.

If you spare her, Jaheria will approve this and you will never see Viconia again. It is a very nice surprise for the veterans of the franchise, as Viconia is a companion from Baldur’s Gate 2. At this point, Viconia DeVir demands that you surrender Shadowheart to her and side with Sharran’s disciples. Before starting the quest, make sure you have recruited Shadowheart. You can also start this quest without Shadowheart by talking to a man named Arves on a bridge north of Elerrathin’s Home. We also recommend recruiting Minsc and Jaheira for some additional dialogues.

The House of Grief can be found in Act Three of Baldur’s Gate 3. Once you gain access to the Lower City, you can find it in the northwestern corner of the map, as shown in the image above. You can go to the Baldur’s Gate Waypoint to get a close fast travel location. Up to this point, you’ve likely accompanied Shadowheart on her journey to become a Dark Justiciar in Baldur’s Gate 3, however once in Act Three Shadowheart has taken an interest in finding her lost parents. Once you have defeated Viconia DeVir, you can attempt to open the Threshold of Loss door behind her safely which leads to the chamber where Shadowheart's parents reside.

Ruben Vives is a general assignment reporter for the Los Angeles Times. A native of Guatemala, he got his start in journalism by writing for The Times’ Homicide Report in 2007. At OUR HOUSE, we provide essential grief support for a universal experience that deserves heightened understanding and acceptance. Our programs serve adults, teens, children and toddlers, which include grief support groups that are specific to the age of the griever, length of time since the death, and the relationship to the person who died. When you first encounter the Sharr lookout in Rivington, you’re given your next instruction.

You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times. Goodwin left the Johnson administration, against the president’s wishes, to pursue a solo writing career. Over time, his public stance against American involvement in Vietnam pitted him against his former boss. “It’s like being bitten by your own dog,” Johnson said of Goodwin’s defection. Goodwin, the author of award-winning biographies of Lyndon B. Johnson, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and others, has a nice touch as a storyteller. Here she successfully navigates the awkward feat of weaving together the couple’s gently probing conversations, her husband’s archival documentation, other historical sources and her own reporting.

Viconia will ask you to hand Shadowheart over to her so that there will be no problems. Here comes a big decision for you, as Shadowheart no longer wants to be with people who worship Shar and harm her. You can either defend Shadowheart and fight Viconia and her comrades or surrender Shadowheart to Viconia and let her down. Viconia is a tough boss, so you’ll have to get your hands dirty if you want to save Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Once the Sharrans are dead, the quest is complete since they can no longer remove anyone’s memories. This gives you access to the back room where you can interact with the bench in the center. After your interaction you’ll be able to proceed further into the sanctum, where you’ll meet with several Sharrans led by Viconia DeVir, who wants the artefact.
I recommend trying to keep yourself out of the main hallway chokepoint and using AOE spells to clear out one side. If you have to fight in the chokepoints, spells like Cloudkill or Hunger of Hadar can work wonders. After a tumultuous Act 2 for Shadowheart, her companion quest will lead to the House of Grief in Baldur’s Gate 3 Act 3. Here, one of the earliest companions you can recruit will come to terms with her origins, her deity, and her very self.
Ask Shadowheart to kill her parents, save them, or let Shadowheart decide. You can avoid this attack if Shadowheart is a level 10 cleric. At this level, she will also get access to the Divine Intervention class feature.

During the camp scene after a long rest, Shadowheart's parents will approach her. I spent a long time running around the area before I found the lookout. In fact, I'd already found the House of Grief in the Lower City, but hadn't realised it was the headquarters of the Sharran cloister. Here, I'll explain where to find the Sharran lookout in Rivington, as well as how to get to the House of Grief, and what's worth investigating while you're there helping out Shadowheart. Your choice here will affect your progress updates for this quest and Surrender Shadowheart to Viconia. During this interaction, you need to choose between Shadowheart or Sharran followers.
Go to the House of Grief and face the consequences of your actions and try to save your parents. Once DeVir is saved or killed, you can progress into the Chamber of Lost at the end of the arena to wrap up Shadowheart’s questline in Baldur’s Gate 3. The House of Grief is a hidden temple to the Goddess Shar in Baldur’s Gate 3. This area plays a major factor in Shadowheart’s story as it is where her parents are being held captive. Before you venture to this area, you should know the decisions you have made for Shadowheart so far will have major consequences in this area. Though you can simply show up the House of Grief on your own, you can also get a clue as to the location early on in Act Three.
The party can either agree, starting Surrender Shadowheart to Viconia, or refuse, which starts a fight. Defeating Viconia or giving Shadowheart over to her resolves the quest. If Shadowheart left the party permanently (and is considered dead), Viconia will complain that it should be her who killed Shadowheart, attacking the party, unless you succeed on DC 30 Persuasion check. When we experience a loss, regardless of its form, we must grieve what was in order to integrate what can be. As a society, we have been taught there are 5 stages of grief, yet when you actually experience a loss, it hardly follows any sort of schedule.
